Best hideouts on a wet day at the Singapore Zoo

Somehow, we never get to visit the Singapore Zoo on a dry day. As far as I can recollect, it always rained heavily halfway through our visit.

Since the park is mostly unsheltered, it can get quite nasty when heavy showers occur unexpectedly and you dash for the nearest shelter with nothing else to see nor do.

On the day we joyfully visited the Singapore Zoo, and with the kids skipping along, gigantic raindrops started falling from the sky the moment we passed the entrance. Thankfully, we found a couple of shelters that not only shielded us from the heavy downpour, but also with sufficiently enough attractions to keep us all entertained.

Best Shelters in the Singapore Zoo

In order of my preference:-

Reptopia

Reptopia is one of the newest additions to the Singapore Zoo. Opened in mid-2017, the attraction is home to 60 over species of reptiles and amphibians. One-third of these species are new to the zoo.

The entire attraction is indoor and air-conditioned. We were well-protected from the heavy showers and leisurely strolled in Reptopia for about 30 minutes, from the start to the end, appreciating the unusual creatures before us. Since the rain lasted for about an hour, we strolled backward and forward again to get to know the creatures really well.

These are some of the beautiful reptiles and amphibians we saw.

Reptopia is located beside the Reptile Garden. You can also enter from the walkway between the Cat Country and the Fragile Forest.

Rainforest KidzWorld

For those who wish to take cover from the rain, Rainforest KidzWorld is another wonderful place. You can either rest your legs in the KFC restaurant located inside the attraction or stroll along the sheltered stables. But a word of warning. You may find the stench from the stables repulsive.

Find a rabbit hut near the stables and you can entertain yourself with the cute rodents such as guinea pigs and hamsters, as well as rabbits that roam freely in the rabbit hut. By the way, do you know that rabbits are not classified as rodents?

Our stay in the rabbit hut coincided with the Keeper Encounter. Not only the children get to feed the goats, a number of young kids (baby goats) were brought into the rabbit hut. Our children enjoyed a face-to-face experience with the kids but were too frightened to carry any.

Rainforest KidzWorld is located the furthest from the entrance. You can either take the tram and alight at Tram Station 4, or make a dash for the cute animals if you happen to be in the Reptile Garden watching the Komodo Dragons and Giant Tortoise.

Australasia

If by any chance you are on the left side of the Singapore Zoo where the hippos are, sprint for the kangaroos. Otherwise, take the tram to Tram Station 2. You will get some covered walkways while watching the kangaroos. There is even an air-conditioned haven for you to observe the kangaroos. This place is not as enjoyable as the previous two, but if you are stuck in the rain, it is better than waiting out in a garden pavilion.

Trams

I do not list the tram services as the best bet because in times of heavy rain, tram services stop for safety reasons. In Singapore, heavy showers are typically accompanied by lightnings which pose a real danger to the trams and their passengers.

Nonetheless, in case of drizzling, the tram is the most effective way to tour around the zoo until the rain stops.

Ah Meng Restuarant

Ah Meng Restuarant is a great place for your water break, toilet break and perhaps tea break, though I would not consider buying anything there for tea if possible. There is a water dispenser in the shelter for you to refill your water bottle.

Garden Pavilions

If you are stuck in the middle of nowhere and are desperate for shelter, you can charge down to the many pavilions situated everywhere. It is just that the experience is not entirely pleasant and time can be better spent elsewhere.

No matter what, always bring along your poncho and umbrella so that you remain unstoppable by the rain.
