A Weekend Getaway in Poseidon Oysterbay Resort

We decided to bring the kids somewhere novel, and that is staying in a kelong! I haven’t experienced it myself too, so it was a trip that I was anticipating.

We brought our 4 children, aged eight years old and below, including two 22-month toddlers, our parents, and a domestic helper. We had a good time there and filled our tummies with sumptuous food.

Where is Poseidon Oysterbay Resort?

Poseidon Oysterbay Resort is located in the Johor River. To get there, we took a 5-minute boat ride from Telok Sengat, Kota Tinggi, a 90-minutes car ride from the Johor custom. Click here for the location on google Maps.

The Resort

Don’t expect much from the resort. It is a kelong, after all. We went there to enjoy family time and for the children to bond with their grandparents. The resort is simple and clean, cosy and inviting.

I was attracted to the romantic landscape around the kelong. Therefore, whenever an opportunity arose, I would sit on the benches to luxuriate in the beautiful scenery, consisting of the vast Johor River and the surrounding greenery amid the waters.

Get comfortable on the benches overlooking the Senai-Desaru Bridge, Johor River and Sunset.

The Kelong

Poseidon Oysterbay Bay farms mainly oysters and mussels. However, there are some fish too.

It was an excellent experience for my children to explore the kelong and observe how mussels and oysters are farmed.

Activities Available

Since the resort is located in a kelong, the highlight of the stay is most probably the tasty seafood that the kelong serves for dinner. Nonetheless, there are other activities to keep the guests occupied.

Two karaoke facilities are available for those who love to sing, and two kayaks for the adventurous ones.

There were a couple of families with young children too. After rounds of table tennis, soft archery and darts, the kids made new friends.

If you are considering a budget-friendly bonding session with your extended family in the resort, I would suggest you bring along some card games or board games to get more out of the trip.

Satiated with Seafood

Our table overflowed with seafood during dinner! For a family of 5 adults and four young kids, they served us a huge seabass, a piece of snapper, fresh oysters, bbq chicken wings, grilled beef and stir-fried chicken. On top of these, they prepared steamboats with crab, prawn, fish slices and lots of vegetables.

A note on the oysters – the kelong farms oysters, and obviously, we are eating oysters fresh from the waters. These oysters are large and crunchy, very similar to those I ate in Taiwan and unlike those, I ate in Tasmania, which were creamy and delicate.

Morning breakfast was splendid, too, especially the oyster porridge. I ate two bowls of it plus another bowl of broth.

The lady boss Jane personally cooked the porridge and many other dishes we had for dinner. Then, she started preparing dinner in the morning.

The Accommodation

The rooms are air-conditioned with an attached bathroom. Each room comes with a balcony too. It was simple and clean, though I wish the bathroom were in better condition. Maybe it is just me and my OCD.

Smoking is allowed in the kelong. Unfortunately, my numerous encounter with a smoking guest did not serve my sensitive lungs well. And thanks to the squeaky wooden floor and active guests running around the kelong at midnight, it took us a while to fall into a deep sleep. However, don’t expect to surf your social media till you feel sleepy because wifi connection is really weak.

Going There

With four young kids tagging along, we try to keep travelling as simple as possible. Thus travelling to Malaysia means by taking a private 7-seater or bigger most of the time. For this and our previous trip to Legoland, we hired private vehicles from HG Travel and Tour, SG & MY Taxi.
