We exposed our four children to baby books before they turned one. We let them flip, throw and bang the books on the table, but we try our best not to bite the books.

The type of baby books we choose for them changes over time, depending on their age and interest. We like variety and prefer to introduce our children to different books most of the time, thus we visit the NLB regularly for its extensive selection.

Baby Books from 6 months old onwards

The intent here is to expose them to the idea of flipping through books and appreciating the lovely illustrations, rather than to get any real reading done.

Our ideal board book should fit comfortably in our babies’ hands, with sturdy pages that cannot be torn apart. I particularly like books with clear and uncomplicated pictures with clean lines.

I tried to start our babies with very simple word books in contrasting colours when they were six months old. When they learned to play peek-a-boo, I moved them to flap books. At one-year-old, they are very curious about their surroundings and begin to understand words and follow my instructions. Thus I introduce them various types of concept books such as colours, food, vehicles and emotions.

But this is just my personal preference. Every child is different, and I believe we as parents should go with the flow and support them according to their speed of development.

We played with many baby books, far more than what is shared here. There are many others that I like too, but I did not record them as photos, thus omitted here.

The Book List as follows

Where’s the Hen? / Where’s the Owl?

A baby book filled with five beautifully illustrated spreads that show a series of friendly animals hiding behind bright felt flaps. And there’s a mirror on the final page!

I like it that the pictures are brightly coloured. The sturdy flaps which are made of felt instead of paper encourage our little ones to explore beyond what they see.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Easter Colours by Eric Carle

The book is about a very hungry caterpillar which ate continuously until he made a cocoon around himself and went to sleep. Weeks later, he woke up and transformed into a beautiful butterfly.

Conceptually, this is too hard for any six months old to 1-year-old child. But they will love the simple pictures illustrated in spreads, each with a different colour theme.

Now that my babies have turned one, I will reintroduce the book to them.

Things that Go: BabyTouch First focus

I would have bought this book for my twins if I came across it earlier. The book contains a range of vehicles in high-contrast colours that are attention-grabbing and stimulate our little ones’ developing eyesight.

A book filled with photos of adorable babies and toddlers in an array of expression, happy face, sad face etc. There is a mirror at the end of the book to reflect our babies’ faces.

Edible Colors

This book introduces colours to babies in a great way! First, it presents a photo of familiar food, for example, a typical orange carrot. Then, carrots in other colours appear in the next few spreads! Many of the fruits and vegetables appear in our kitchen frequently, and our twins can somewhat recognise them.

Even my 7-year old and 8-year old were engrossed in this book that teaches children about the incredible diversity of food.
