Weather for Toddlers – They had lotsa fun learning!

The theme for our 35-month old twins was “Weather”. We had so much fun creating weather scenes, read and learned words related to weather. Their favourite topic was rainbow.

We love thematic learning because we can select topics that the twins like, and incorporate related language, science and art activities into our daily program. As for Maths, we typically carry out separate low-prep activities as creating thematic activities to learn Maths seems too much work for me.

Sharing our activities below.

Rainbow

I was heavily involved in creating the rainbow below. Blending colours and making bends are beyond their capabilities for now, so I held their hands to complete their work. They were totally captivated by the process.

Our second attempt on the rainbow accompanied by the rain and sun. The twins completed 80% of the painting on their own with instructions from me. And we made it a lot achievable by including a wooden bear to finish up the scene.

Wind

We searched for natural materials to use in our artwork too. Strong wind rustle in the trees and sway the branches. Leaves get blown away.

Sun

Since it is a weather for toddlers theme, dressing up for the right weather is a sure-win way to get them interested. Below is from teacherpayteacher.

Below is a set DYI set to introduce some words to the twins. I was not expecting them to remember any word, just an introduction to the Letter ‘R’ for rain and rainbow, and Letter ‘S’ for sun and sky, and the phonic sound for ‘R’ and ‘S’.

I also attempted to lead them towards learning a simple Chinese word via their favourite activity – painting.

Last but not least, bubbles get blown away by the wind!

We briefly touched on snow and storm which appear to be common in other Nursery level curriculum. However, I could not sustain the twins’ interest in the Weather Theme, so we merely read these topics from books.

Here are some of the books that the tots like and/or I found useful

Wind by Helen Cox Cannons.

Rain by Helen Cox Cannons.

Snow by Helen Cox Cannons.

Sunshine by Helen Cox Cannons.

Grandma’s nursery rhymes – Itsy Bitsy Spider* by Hilb, Nora – We love this book a lot. Other than lovely illustrations, there are many other adorable bugs all over the books and ample opportunities for search-and-count.

If you allow your little ones to watch TV.
